AA1 Our Acknowledgement Criteria

Purpose

How we decide what is worth improving

In our lives, we are inundated with a barrage of information. For effective improvement and progress to be made, it is important for us to choose wisely the things that we wish to focus on and improve.

One way to effectively filter this information is to create a list of goals. However, rather than simply creating a list of goals and working towards them, we advocate creating an acknowledgement list.

The acknowledgement list acts as a reference and reminder of the events and actions you wish to consciously review, challenge, and potentially improve. It has advantages over a simple list of goals because it highlights relevant learning and reflection opportunities.

It is impossible to review every event, action, or new piece of information in our lives. Having a list of acknowledgement criteria can help you review things that are relevant to you, but also remind you not to spend large amounts of time reviewing things that you have decided are irrelevant in your life.

By using this approach, you will learn more about yourself and the challenges you face in your environment. This will help you create relevant and authentic goals, while also providing a focus for your energy and effort.

Tips on establishing your acknowledgement list:

  • We change, so our list will change: Have a review point at the end of a time period (e.g., fortnightly/monthly).

  • Anything you want to reflect on can be included: Interactions, actions, personal reactions, challenges, successes, or emotions can all make the list.

  • It doesn't have to take a long time: Reflection doesn't mean it has to take a long time. It may simply mean taking an extra minute to reflect on an event.

  • Not all good or all bad: Ensure that there are both positive and negative things on the list. Give yourself the appropriate time to think about these things. We should focus on positive things to acknowledge and recognize growth, and we should focus on negative things to improve and channel change.

Record your list and learnings: Your list should be recorded and acknowledged as it constantly changes. Keeping a record of your lists will help you track your growth and development, which will support your development of a strong self-image.
