Soft Skill Training at Work

In business, awareness is essential. There are numerous models and tools* which have emerged as standards for business and employee development. While many of these tools provide us with valuable information about our businesses and employees, the prerequisites for truly harnessing the knowledge gained and producing tangible benefits for employees and businesses are employee awareness and engagement.

All successful businesses now accept the benefits of "soft skill training" and the importance of having an engaged workforce. The research shows that a happy and engaged workforce is good for long-term business success. This has resulted in increased investment in "soft skills" and engagement training. The market was worth around US$15.1 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach around US$38 billion by 2027.

Soft Skill Training Investment

Some businesses believe that the greater the amount spent on "soft skills" training, the better the awareness and engagement of the workforce. However, there are many models that challenge this simplistic view of training. Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger proposed a 70:20:10 model of learning, which states that 70% of learning comes from completing challenging tasks, 20% from developmental relationships, and only 10% from formal training.

Another model commonly quoted when evaluating the efficacy of soft skill training is Pareto's 80:20 principle. This states that for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. In the case of soft skill training, this would mean that 80% of the benefits may be achieved from only 20% of the training.

For employers, it is important that their investments in soft skill training yield the maximum potential benefits for both the workforce and the employees. For employees, it is important to learn how to choose relevant soft skill training and gain the maximum benefit from these training opportunities.
