IA2 Staying in the Adult state

Here is a revised version with a few minor corrections:

Purpose:

Understand the mindset that should be adopted to effectively analyze and perform in interactions.

Explanation:

It is important to engage in interactions, whether we are learning, leading, or co-regulating. To do this effectively, we must maintain an objective and open mindset, known as the "Adult state" in Transactional Analysis.

Below are some tips on how to maintain our Adult state while interacting with others:

Adult State: Tips

  1. Listen actively - Take time to listen to what is being said, actively record important pieces of information, and ask relevant questions to gain insight into the messages of the interaction.

  2. Quiet your inner thoughts - If you are unable to silence your inner thoughts, you are unable to actively listen. You should focus all your attention on the present interaction.

  3. Reserve judgment - Making judgments during an interaction may limit the amount of information you are able to obtain and damage the relationship between you and the other participants. Judgement requires personal bias, which should be avoided during the interaction.

  4. Analyze - Throughout an interaction, you should carefully consider the information being provided by yourself and others, and then analyze it. It is important to stress the difference between analysis and judgement. Judgement involves filtering information through your own biases, while analysis is the process of understanding and finding explanations for the things you observe.

  5. Understand the identity of the interaction - Along with the content of the interaction, all interactions have a spirit or identity. This can be composed of the intentions, attitudes, and comfort levels of the participants. Understanding not only the content but the identity of the interaction can help you gain a deeper understanding of the interaction.
