Encountering and dealing with change is challenging. Unfortunately, our lives are full of change and therefore challenges. Our perception of the challenges we face, and our mindset affect how we react and deal with change. Being tough with change means developing a robust mindset which will help us cope in the face of the inevitable changes in life. It's about coping with change.


Below are a few tips on how you can develop and maintain a robust mindset when dealing with change.


Accept change


Accepting that change exists in our lives is the first step to coping and dealing with change. It allows us to prepare ourselves to deal with the changes we will encounter. Acceptance is easier said than done. Give yourself time to accept the change. Perhaps you may need time to mourn your past life or discuss the implications for the future. Whatever your process, the acceptance of change is an important step to effectively dealing with change.

Change represents a challenge to our comfort levels and norm. It requires us to use additional/different energy and resources to deal with it. As humans, we tend to be creatures of routine (no matter how strange some of our routines appear). We all have them, but we do not all acknowledge them. Our routines are the actions that get us through our day with minimum cognitive effort. We do not have to think hard about them, and we have done them many times. Acknowledging routines will make it easier to recognize change, especially pertinent change in your life. It is a fundamental skill on which our toughness is developed.


Recognize Pertinent Change


Change is ubiquitous, and we cannot consciously recognize and implement strategies to deal with every change we encounter in life. Therefore, it is imperative that we are able to recognize changes which are pertinent and important to us. To recognize pertinent changes, we must identify our routines, acknowledge changes, and understand our values.


Reflecting on Change

Being tough with change means learning from change. To be able to learn from the pertinent changes we experience, we must be able to reflect on them. Reflecting on change helps us identify our strengths and weaknesses. It can also support the development of effective strategies to deal with future change.


Actively implement change


So, we have talked about how change is a challenge and effectively dealing with pertinent change is an important life skill. One way to challenge yourself and develop these life skills is to actively implement change in your life, by periodically adjusting your routines. This may be as simple as brushing your teeth with the opposite hand or as difficult as completely changing your diet. Active implementation of change keeps you in control and allows you to challenge yourself as you see fit.
